And now for the 3rd dimension
What if the nightmare at the window is you on another plane? Grasping a peek at what you're doing on that level. I have often wondered if there is a world in which I did not survive the electric shock of 94 and orphan children and widow exist only to get a glimps of me at the window on a hallowed night. Add near death to the equation, so when you die one world you are dead and the other you move to and still exist but don't know or have recall of the transfer.

Only at night! :-)

ETA: Interesting thought about the fear of self angle...maybe fear of imperfection? Fear of doing the wrong thing, and causing a catatastrophe? Something to mull over!

Interesting that the nightmare doesn't see you until you see it. Is it possible that your deepest fear is of yourself?
p.s. I apologize for going around opening all your blinds when I last visited. That must have made you crazy!!

Kai, add a few more dimes to the jar of shared experiences. I too have harbored (and still do) irrational fears that caused me to (yes, even as an adult when I am home alone), drop to the floor and creep over to the window and close the blinds in such a feat of gymnastics so as not to expose any part of my body to the imagined eyes of villains and terrors. For some reason what comes to mind is the belief I had as a child that I was safe under my blankets. I would throw them over my head, create a small hole to the outside world for fresh air and I felt protected.

I still to this day wake Corvus up when I absolutely can't stand it and I need to get up and pee or grab a glass of water and beg him to promise he'll stay awake until I get back. He has to be awake on some level in order to save me. If he falls asleep, I will get taken. Taken where? Somehow this probably ties into me seeing Nightmare on Elm Street at the ungodly young age of 7.

Anyway, Happy Halloween. We'll be thinking of you tonight as we eat our stuffed squash and spice cake (with whipped maple icing - yum!) while watching all the Buffy Halloween episodes :)

Hi, Christina, glad you dropped by--even if we weren't quite what you were looking for. Re: your nutcracker phobia--you didn't happen to see the ballet when you were really young and get freaked out by it, did you? I remember being terrified of the big Nutcracker, with that ugly grimace and those huge teeth. Yipes!

And P, I hear you--the really scary stuff isn't in creepy legends or gory movies; it's in the frightening stuff life can throw at us without any warning. Maybe that's part of what makes Halloween haunting so fun; we can be thrilled and chilled, all the time knowing we're perfectly safe.

My blog for yesterday was "bad dream", when I did a quick search for it I found your site. I'm sure it was terrifying at the time, but your description about the 3 bear nightmare cracked me up. I'm afraid of dolls and nutcrackers. Even as a little kid I thought they would come to life and bite me, or chase me.

Ok. So I have a limit. Not sure if the first one went through or not...The one thing that scares me is the possiblity of losing any of my family-my kids, wife, or brother and sister. Really nothing scares me like they used to..the old classics Halloween and Friday the 13th. Those were suspenseful movies...they didn't come right out and kill people...they worked up to it. I would have to agree with Kari..it's the "something out there" that scares me....
